Choosing a device
There is no single best option. The right choice depends on what you already own and what you do most often. TinyPlay is designed to let an existing computer handle playback in the living room; if it can already connect to your TV, you may not need to buy another box just for a better phone remote.

Windows mini PC or laptop
If the computer can connect to the TV over HDMI and meets the source's decoding requirements, TinyPlay can turn it into a living-room player. It suits people who want to keep browser access, desktop software, downloads, and Docker.
M-series Mac mini
The Mac mini suits people who want one device for playback, browsing, work, and home services. TinyPlay moves playback controls from the desktop to the phone while leaving the computer available for everyday use.
Apple TV 4K
If you mainly stream and want an easy remote-control experience for the whole household, Apple TV 4K is a mature, low-maintenance choice. It serves a different role from using an existing computer as the player, and the two can coexist.
Professional Blu-ray media player
If local video playback is the main use and you prefer a purpose-built device, a professional Blu-ray media player can be a good fit. Many current models run app-installable systems, so download clients are often available; a full Docker-style container environment is still usually outside what these devices are built for. Check the exact model for supported containers, HDR, Dolby Vision, and audio formats.
Check before buying
Actual playback capabilities vary with the chip, operating system, drivers, player, source container, TV, and audio equipment. Check the manufacturer's specifications against your own media before buying.
